A 16-year-old hockey player remains in critical condition after being hit in the neck with a puck during a game in Edmonton.

The incident happened on Saturday afternoon when the player was apparently trying to block a shot.

Officials with the South Side Athletic Club Midget AA team said earlier Sunday the teen was on life support during the night.

Marg Brownoff, registrar for the team, said the player died Sunday morning.

However, a spokesman with the Alberta Health Services said later that the teen was still alive and remained in critical condition.

Greg Kennedy says he cannot make any further comments on the boy’s current status because the parents have withdrawn their consent for the release of information.

Hockey Alberta has been notified of the incident.
